Good afternoon everyone!
I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend.
Gym – The students started the day doing gym with Mr. Orr, which you can read about on his blog (http://tysonorr.blogspot.com)
Inquiry into Matter – Today, we did one of our final summative presentations for matter.
Music – Then, we had music with Mr. Oliver, which you can read about on his blog (https://mrolivermusicclass.blogspot.com).
French - In the afternoon, we had French with Mme. Rawan, which you can read about on her blog (https://mmerawansja.blogspot.com).
Inquiry into Math – We continued our unit on measurement today with a lesson on counting money to $10, 000. When working with large numbers, estimation is a great tool, because it allows us to work with friendly numbers. For example, let’s say you are adding $456.13 + $891.43 + $172.98 + $531.44. Here are two things you can do:
Round to the hundreds:
Instead of adding the actual numbers, you round to the nearest hundred, and add those, so the question becomes: $500 + $900 + $200 + $500 = $2100
Round to the fifties:
Instead of adding the actual numbers, you round to the nearest fifty, and add those, so the question becomes: $450 + $900 + $150 + $550 = $2050
When we add these numbers:
$456.13 + $891.43 + $172.98 + $531.44 = $2051.98
As we can see, the estimate was very close to the number.
Inquiry into Language – Today, we continued our lesson on narrative writing. We worked on mapping out our story. This involves drawing a small picture of what will happen in the beginning, middle, and end. We can also write a topic sentence (what gets people to want to read the story), and supporting sentences for the beginning, middle, and end.
Inquiry into Ancient Civilizations – We continued our inquiry into Ancient Rome by discussing Ancient Roman clothing and town life. We learned what men and women used to wear in Rome, and we learned about what townspeople used to do. People in Rome used to visit bathhouses where they had steam rooms, indoor pools, and recreational activities. This is very much like culture today – we have spas.
