Good afternoon everyone!
I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend.
Gym – The students started the day doing gym with Mr. Orr, which you can read about on his blog (http://tysonorr.blogspot.com)
Inquiry into Language – We started our week with our seventh lesson of spelling for the year. Today, we focussed on the long ‘a’ and long ‘o’ sounds. The vowel pairsai(as in drain) and ay (decay) make the long ‘a’ sound, and the vowel pairs oa(cocoa) and ow (borrow) make the long ‘o’ sound. We have our spelling test this week on Thursday to give us more time for our Ontario Writing Assessment on Friday.
Music – Then, we had music with Mr. Oliver, which you can read about on his blog (https://mrolivermusicclass.blogspot.com).
French - In the afternoon, we had French with Mme. Rawan, which you can read about on her blog (https://mmerawansja.blogspot.com).
Inquiry into Math – Today, we started our new unit of math, which is measurement. We started by discussing the different time zones in Canada, and how to calculate the times across the country. We also had a very lively discussion on how the time zones were actually formed and how we get our times and seasons (why days are shorter during the winter and longer during the summer).
A time zone tells us what time it is in different places in the world. We can have standard time, or daylight time. This is why sometimes you will see Eastern Standard time, or Eastern Daylight time. Standard time is for the winter and spring, and daylight time (when there is more daylight) is during the summer and fall. There are six main time zones in Canada: Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern, Atlantic, and Newfoundland. We are in the Eastern time zone. Related to us, the time zones follow this pattern:
- · Pacific – 3 hours behind
- · Mountain – 2 hours behind
- · Central – 1 hour behind
- · Eastern – on time
- · Atlantic – 1 hour ahead
- · Newfoundland – 1.5 hours ahead
We worked as a class on a few examples, and had some time in the class to complete the assigned homework.
Inquiry into Matter – We finished our matter unit today. We completed our KWL charts by filling in 5 things we had learned about matter throughout our unit. After this, we completed our reflection of our favourite part of the unit, and how we were inquirers and reflective during the unit.
Inquiry into Ancient Civilizations – We started our new Unit of Inquiry, which is Ancient Civilizations. We did a KWL chart, filling in what we know already, and what we want to know. We are excited to kick off our new UOI.
