Monday, October 15th

Good afternoon everyone!

I hope you all had a great weekend. A reminder that our first math assessment went home last week, along with the term one DRAs. I will be continuing unit phone calls this week as well. A reminder that each phone call is limited to ten minutes, but I will be happy to set up times to speak other than that once this week is finished.

This morning, we had our Scientists in the School workshop. We had a lot of fun performing experiments hands on, and learning even more about matter. We learned about acids and bases, the pH scale, and the periodic table. Apparently, cabbage juice is a natural pH indicator – who knew?! We learned about exothermic reactions (where energy is released) and endothermic reactions (where energy is absorbed). We even learned that it is called sublimation when going between the solid and gas states directly. It was an amazing learning experience for everyone. Thank you to Scientist Marsha for coming to our school today and teaching us.

In the afternoon, we had French with Mme. Rawan, which you can read about on her blog (link on the left).

Inquiry into Math – We continued our unit on number patterns by starting our discussion on integers. An integer is any whole number. An integer can be either positive or negative.

We did an activity where everyone was given two integers and had to put them on our number line. We did it on the first try.

After this, we discussed some of the ways we see integers in the real world. We did a few examples as a class.

We ended our day working on our matter summatives (our science fair experiment) in class. Students should already have all of their rough work, and have completed their experiments three times this past weekend. For the matter summative, students should already have:
·      An experiment
·      A title
·      A question
·      Independent and Dependent variables
·      A hypothesis
·      A list of materials
·      A procedure
·      Observations (with pictures and graphs)
We worked on good copies today, will be doing the same tomorrow, and Wednesday. Final matter summatives are due Thursday.

For homework:

A couple of quick reminders:
·      Starting last week, students need to wear their winter uniform, so ALL 7 pieces. We had a few uniform slip-ups last week; this week and ongoing, the expectation is full winter uniform every day.
o  Black leather dress shoes
o  Navy blue socks
o  St. Jude’s grey pants or skirts
o  St. Jude’s button up white shirt (long sleeve)
o  St. Jude’s sweater vest
o  Academic tie (Monday-Thursday) & House Colour Tie (Friday)
o  St. Jude’s Blazer
·      Scholastic order forms were sent home last week, and if any orders are being put in, they have to be submitted by this Thursday, October 18th.
·      Picture Day is next Thursday, October 25th– forms were sent home yesterday.
·      Today, a permission form was sent home for our trip to the ROM (for Ancient Greece) on November 8th. We have to confirm with the ROM regarding our numbers by next Monday. Therefore, all permission forms must be submitted by next Monday – no exceptions. Late forms cannot, and will not be accepted.
As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email, and I will respond as quickly as possible.
