Wednesday, October 17th

Good afternoon everyone!

The week is officially more than half over! A reminder that unit phone calls are still taking place as our week comes to a close.

Today, we started by having Reading Buddies with Ms. Brew’s class. The grade fives love their time with their reading buddies!

Inquiry into Language – We read chapter 15 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. We took time in class to complete our chapter 15 comprehension homework so tonight’s  focus could be the math review. Students finished fairly quickly and chose to dedicate some time to their final UOI summative.

In the afternoon, we had French with Mme. Rawan, which you can read about on her blog (link on the left).

Inquiry into Matter – The students spent the remainder of the afternoon working on their matter summative. By now, students should have:

  • ·      An experiment
  • ·      A title
  • ·      A question
  • ·      Independent and Dependent variables
  • ·      A hypothesis
  • ·      A list of materials
  • ·      A procedure
  • ·      Observations (with pictures and graphs)
Good copies of work were to be brought in today (typed). Students had approximately 2.5 hours in class today to paste information, pictures, and decorate their boards. The UOI summative for matter is due tomorrow, which is when presentations and demonstrations will start.

For math, our final assessment for our number patterns unit is this Friday, October 19th. Students who need additional help may stay in for their second recess tomorrow with me to review what they do not understand. We will take up our math review as it is due tomorrow.

For homework:

  • PJ Chapter 15 comprehension worksheet (due tomorrow)
  • Unit 1 Math Review (due tomorrow)
  • Spelling Lesson 6 (due Friday)
  • UOI Matter Summative (due tomorrow)
A couple of quick reminders:

  • ·      Starting last week, students need to wear their winter uniform, so ALL 7 pieces. We had a few uniform slip-ups last week; this week and ongoing, the expectation is full winter uniform every day.

o  St. Jude’s grey pants or skirts
o  St. Jude’s button up white shirt (long sleeve)
o  St. Jude’s sweater vest
o  Academic tie (Monday-Thursday) & House Colour Tie (Friday)
o  St. Jude’s Blazer

  • ·      Scholastic order forms were sent home last week, and if any orders are being put in, they have to be submitted by TOMORROW (Thursday, October 18th).
  • ·      Picture Day is next Thursday, October 25th– forms were sent home yesterday.
  • ·      On Monday, a permission form was sent home for our trip to the ROM (for Ancient Greece) on November 8th. We have to confirm with the ROM regarding our numbers by next Monday. Therefore, all permission forms must be submitted by next Monday – no exceptions. Late forms cannot, and will not be accepted.
As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email, and I will respond as quickly as possible.
