Good afternoon everyone!
I hope you all had a wonderful
Thanksgiving!
Inquiry into Language – We started
off with spelling. The spelling lesson today in grade 5 was reviewing the sound
of ‘l’ and ‘el’, which can be spelled with ‘le’ as in pickle, ‘el’ as in towel, or
‘al’ as in final. Over in grade 6
spelling, the focus was words with the sound of ‘sh’ such as: ‘sh’ as in shoe, ‘su’ as in insure, ‘ti’ as in convention
or partial, ‘ci’ as in facial, or ‘ch’ as in machinery.
After this, we read chapter 10 or Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning
Thief.
We had our library time after this
with Ms. Hayward, which you can read about on her blog (link on the left).
In the afternoon, we had French,
which you can read about on Mme. Rawan’s blog (link on the left).
Inquiry into Math – We reviewed
what we started last week with Input / Output machines. Today, we learned about
terms, which are all of the numbers
in a pattern (i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) Then, we learned a new concept, which is recursive patterns. A recursive pattern
is a pattern where each term is found by applying the pattern rule to the
previous term. For example, if the rule is ‘ x 5 – 3 ’: 1 x 5 – 3 = 2, 2 x 5 –
3 = 7, 7 x 5 – 3 = 32, so our terms are 1, 2, 7, 32, etc.
We then learned how to work backwards.
First you look at the difference between the terms. In our first example, the
difference between each of the terms is 25, so the pattern rule is ‘subtract 25’.
In the second example, it is not so simple. If the differences are not the
same, you must find the way to move between the differences. For example, if
the differences are 4, 12, 36 à 4 x 3 = 12, 12 x
3 = 36, etc.
We will be continuing this
tomorrow!
In the last part of the afternoon,
we had a discussion regarding our matter summative, and expectations. Students
were given time to complete some homework, or to start their research.
For homework:
A couple of quick reminders:
