Happy Halloween!

We started our day with reading buddies! Everyone was dressed so nicely for Halloween and Harvest Season!

Inquiry into Ancient Civilizations – Today, we read a few Greek myths (the story of Arachne, and the story of Medusa). We related them back to our reading on Percy Jackson. Then, we did an art activity where we drew ten of the twelve members of the Olympian council, and learned a little bit more about what they are responsible for!

French - Then, we had French with Mme. Rawan, which you can read about on her blog (https://mmerawansja.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Language – We read chapter twenty-one of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. This was the second last chapter, so we’re almost done.

At the end of the day, we packed up and went for our costume competition and house game. Kappa won one round, and Zeta won the other two! Woohoo!

For homework:

All homework for the day is placed here, but time may have been given in class to complete this work.

A couple of quick reminders:
·      Students need to wear their winter uniform, so ALL 7 pieces. We had a few uniform slip-ups last week; this week and ongoing, the expectation is full winter uniform every day.

o  St. Jude’s grey pants or skirts
o  St. Jude’s button up white shirt (long sleeve)

·      Forms were sent home last Wednesday for our curling trip on November 19th, and December 3rd. This trip was already paid in athletic fees, so the form only needs to be signed.
o  Today, I have sent home a waiver form for curling which must also be signed.

Tuesday, October 30th

I hope everyone is enjoying this cold weather as much as I am! I can’t wait for the snow.

Gym – The students started the day doing gym with Mr. Orr, which you can read about on his blog (http://tysonorr.blogspot.com)

Inquiry into Ancient Civilizations – Today, we completed our final discussion on Ancient Rome. We had a discussion regarding Roman sports and entertainment, the creation and founding of Rome, and the Roman gods. We did notice there were a few striking similarities between Roman and Greek mythology. We also noticed that we derived quite a few modern day things from Ancient Rome.

Music – Then, we had music with Mr. Oliver, which you can read about on his blog (https://mrolivermusicclass.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Language – Today, we wrote our post-assessment for our Ontario Writing Assessment with a focus on narrative writing. Everyone was so hard at work!

After we came back from lunch, we read chapter twenty of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. We then worked on our comprehension.

Monday, October 29th

I hope everyone had a great weekend. I most certainly had a nice and relaxing one.

Inquiry into Math – Today, we consolidated our learning on surface area and volume of a rectangular prism. Just to remind us:

You can calculate surface area, which is the total sum of the areas of ALL the sides of a 3D shape. For a rectangular prism, there are 6 sides (R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6). To find the surface area, we calculate the area of each side, and then add them all up! Remember that the units must be squared (the little 2) since it is area.

You can calculate volume, which is the total space inside a 3D shape.  To find volume, we multiply the length by the width by the height (V = l x w x h). Since this measurement is the calculate 3D space, you cube the unit (the little 3).

We did an activity to continue and further our learning regarding surface area and volume.

Then, we did an inquiry into different unit of measurement. A linear unitis a measurement in one dimension (i.e., distance in cm, m, km). A square unitis a measurement in two dimensions (i.e., area in cm2, m2, km2). A cubic unitis a measurement in two dimensions (i.e., area in cm3, m3, km3).

French - Then, we had French with Mme. Rawan, which you can read about on her blog (https://mmerawansja.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Ancient Civilizations – Today, we consolidated our learning on Ancient Roman structures and education. We did an art activity where we wrote our names and ages using the Ancient Roman alphabet (and script). It was a challenge because some of the letters did not exist, so we had to use our spelling knowledge to make sure we knew the letters that made those sounds.

Inquiry into Language – Today, we reviewed our expectations for a proper narrative. As a reminder: topic sentence, background information, beginning, middle – conflict, middle – resolution, and end. We will be writing our OWA narrative assessment tomorrow.
