Tuesday, January 15th

I hope you are all having a great week. We are very busy, but having a great time in grade five.

A very quick note: Yesterday, the Grade 5 team sent home a notice regarding Fridays lesson for our current unit of inquiry into the human body. On Friday, January 18th, all students will spend the period learning about both reproductive systems. We will focus on images, proper terminology and puberty. Mrs. Hocevar and Ms. Cass will be teaching the girls, and myself and Mr. Orr will be teaching the boys. Please have a read and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

A couple of quick reminders:
·      Tomorrow is a Day 2.
·      Summative packages were set home today for our upcoming summative on the human body. We will begin working on this on Monday. Please read and review the assignment and rubric with your child and let me know if you have any questions.
·      Speech forms were sent home last week. Please sign and return them as soon as possible.
·      Aftercare invoices are due on January 15th; if you are unsure if you have any owing amount, please email Ms. Chiappetta at echiappetta@stjudesacademy.com
·      The grade ones will be holding a Farmer’s market on January 24th& 25th– all proceeds will go to Sick Kids hospital.
·      Re-registration packages are due no later than February 11th, 2019 – at this point we will open registration to the public.
Inquiry into Language – We reviewed what a verb is today during language. A verbis a word that is used to indicate an action. We did some examples to review our knowledge of verbs.

After this, we continued to work on our speeches. Having worked on our introduction yesterday, today we started working on our first body paragraph. This is the paragraph where we further explain our first reason that supports our argument. We have to clearly state the reason, provide examples (between one and three), provide research to support our reason, and then restate our opinion. We will take a break from speeches tomorrow and pick back up our working of them on Thursday.

After this, we sat as a class and did an activity to help us cope with stress. This is very helpful at this time of the year when summatives and speeches start to overlap.

French – In the afternoon, we had French with Mme. Rawan, which you can read about on her blog (https://mmerawansja.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Math – During math, we continued our inquiry into data management by reviewing how create a graph (bar and line graphs today). The most important things to remember is that when we graph, we need to have:
·      Title
·      Both axes labelled
·      An appropriate scale (this has to go up by an amount that does not change)

Inquiry into the Human Body – Today, we wrote our quiz of the respiratory system completing that part of our unit. We started learning about the digestive system, which is the system that breaks down our food and gives us energy.

For homework:
·      Read for 20 minutes
·      MMS Pg. 73 (due tomorrow)
·      UOI poster (due tomorrow)
·      Digestive system activity 1 (due tomorrow)
·      Speech body paragraph 1 (due tomorrow)

All homework for the day is placed here, but time may have been given in class to complete this work.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email, and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Mr. Conte
