Monday, January 14th

I hope you all had a great weekend!

A very quick note: Today, the Grade 5 team sent home a notice regarding Fridays lesson for our current unit of inquiry into the human body. On Friday, January 18th, all students will spend the period learning about both reproductive systems. We will focus on images, proper terminology and puberty. Mrs. Hocevar and Ms. Cass will be teaching the girls, and Mr. Conte and Mr. Orr will be teaching the boys. Please have a read and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

A couple of quick reminders:
·      Tomorrow is a Day 1.
·      Speech forms were sent home last week. Please sign and return them as soon as possible – we will be starting speeches on Monday (my Grade 5s).
·      Aftercare invoices are due on January 15th; if you are unsure if you have any owing amount, please email Ms. Chiappetta at echiappetta@stjudesacademy.com
·      The grade ones will be holding a Farmer’s market on January 24th& 25th– all proceeds will go to Sick Kids hospital.
Gym – The students started the day doing gym with Mr. Orr, which you can read about on his blog (http://tysonorr.blogspot.com)

Inquiry into Language – We reviewed what a noun is today during language. A nounis a word that is used to identify a person, a place, or a thing. We did some examples to review our knowledge of nouns.

Music – Then, we had music with Mr. Oliver, which you can read about on his blog (https://mrolivermusicclass.blogspot.com).

French – In the afternoon, we had French with Mme. Rawan, which you can read about on her blog (https://mmerawansja.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Math – During math, we continued our inquiry into data management by reviewing how to find the mean, median, and mode. To review:
·      Mean – The average; add all of the numbers together, and divide by how many numbers there are.
·      Median – The middle number.
·      Mode – The most recurring number.
There are a few steps to find the median:
1.    Organize all of the numbers from least to greatest.
2.    Find the middle number.
3.    If there are two middle numbers, add them together and divide by 2.
Let’s take the numbers: 12, 4, 3, 4, 14, 12, 4, 11

Organize the numbers: 3, 4, 4, 4, 11, 12, 12, 14

Mean: 3 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 11 + 12 + 12 + 14 = 64 = 64/8 = 8; The mean is 8.
Median: The middle numbers are 4 & 11. 4 + 11 = 15/2 = 7.5; The median is 7.5
Mode: The number 4 occurs the most, so 4 is the mode.

Inquiry into Language – Today, we started our introductions for our speeches. An introduction will:
·      Introduce the person saying the speech.
·      A hook to engage the audience.
·      Information to explain and describe the topic.
·      A clearly stated opinion.
·      3 reasons to support the opinion stated.
We will be working on speeches all week.

For homework:
·      Read for 20 minutes
·      MMS Pg. 70 – 71 (due tomorrow)
·      UOI poster (due Wednesday)
·      Study respiratory diagram
·      Speech introduction (due tomorrow)

All homework for the day is placed here, but time may have been given in class to complete this work.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email, and I will respond as quickly as possible.
