Tuesday, May 12th, Day 5

Good morning everyone!

It is quite an adjustment not being in exhibition anymore, isn’t it? You will get back into the rhythm of things quickly!  We are in the final stretch of the year – this is where you give it your all.

We will begin the day on Discord where we I will review how our day will run today.

In case you didn’t already know, St. Jude’s Academy is putting together our first yearbook spanning from JK to Grade 12 for the 2019-2020 academic year. This inaugural issue will be something all students and their families will treasure. The cost is $20 per full-colour, hardcover yearbook. The deadline to order is May 15. To order your copy contact:  admin@stjudesacademy.com

SJA Yearbook Sponsorship opportunities are available. We will accept a limited number of ads (10 pages) from businesses, groups and families in our SJA Community to help off-set this publication. Design included if required. Deadline to order is May 15. The space options are as follows: Full Page  (7.5” x 8”) $500 or Half Page (7. 5”x 4”) $250.  To place an Ad contact: csawatsky@stjudesacademy.com

A few messages from SJA:

Daily Challenge – This week is our Thumbless Wars!  To complete each of the challenges you should wrap your thumb so it can’t be used. A bandage that folds it down, or duct tape (make sure you wrap in cling-wrap first so it doesn’t hurt taking the tape off!!).  Whatever you need to use to make sure your thumb can’t be used.

Remember: each week we award a prize to the student who sends the most and best videos.  The prize is an Uber Eats dinner of your choice worth $50!

Today’s Thumbless War challenge will take great skill and poise:  Write your name.  Print it, write it in Cursive, it’s up to you – but you must be Thumbless for it to count.  Take a video of you writing your name and showing the end result. Make sure you send it to Mr. Neal (sneal@stjudesacademy.com).

Inquiry into Math: Unit 9 Integers

Mr. Conte will take up homework from yesterday’s class.

Today’s focus: Lesson 9.1

Learning Goal: use a number line to represent integers and use real-world applications of integers.

As a class we will read the example provided on pg. 327 and go through connect to understand positive and negative integers (pg. 327-328).

Discuss real life applications of positive or negative integer.

Ex: weather

-4 is a negative number

We say ‘negative 4.’

When we talk about temperatures below zero we say ‘minus 4’ rather than negative 4’

Homework questions: 1-6

Success Criteria: I understand that…

·      an integer is a positive or negative whole number
·      numbers greater than zero are positive integers
·      numbers less than zero are negative integers
·      opposite integers are equal distances from zero, on opposite sides of zero
·      I can apply my understanding of integers to real-world examples
·      I can use a number line to mark positive and negative integers

UOI - How We Express Ourselves: My Digital Footprint

Activity #1: Think-Pair-Share: Students share their personal experiences where their personal safety has been at risk, what factors allowed them to be in that situation, the risks to themselves, and ways they could have minimized the risks. Students will complete the ‘My Safety at Risk” worksheet and submit on Managebac by 4 pm.

Some students will work on the Oral Fluency testing if there is time.

Students who finish tasks early will go into breakout rooms and continue practicing for the Spelling Bee.

Work that is not completed during class time will need to be completed as homework. Students should put more focus into reading at this time. It is an expectation that students are reading between 30 and 60 minutes per day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out so I can clarify and assist.
