Inquiry into Language – Novel Study

Learning Goal: Students will use visualising as a reading strategy and draw a picture about a chosen portion of the text.

Students meet in groups to discuss their responses to chapter 1 questions and point of view prompts. Students are then assigned to read chapter 2, answer discussion questions, and participate in activities. Today’s activity is Visualising. Students draw a picture that tells about something that happened in chapter 2. Any incomplete work must be completed as homework. This work is due before tomorrow’s novel study class.

Students may choose to join a breakout room where students read silently, or they may choose to join a breakout room where students take turn reading aloud.

Introduce students to the idea of writing a story in exactly 100 words (the title is not counted as part of the story).

It can be about anything. It will be shared with the class. It will be put through the entire writing process. Today’s goal is to brainstorm ideas to write about. Show students how to use the word count feature on Word or Google Docs to count words. Once everyone understands, everyone keeps quiet and writes. At the end of class time, students share their progress. All work MUST be complete in class time and must be 100% student work.

Inquiry into My Digital Footprint

We continue the class discussion about the things the on-line friend said that raise a ‘Red Flag’.

Students are presented with scenarios. They decide if the scenarios raise a red flag or not.

Students record what an on-line friend may say, and what an on-line predator may say.

Students watch Teens Talk Back – Meeting Offline. They discuss the responses of the teens in the video. Students write an email to a friend with tips on how to spot an on-line fake.

Students who complete this activity will work on their 100 word story.

Work that is not completed during class time will need to be completed as homework. Students should put more focus into reading at this time. It is an expectation that students are reading between 30 and 60 minutes per day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out so I can clarify and assist.
