Inquiry into My Digital Footprint

Learning Goal: Students learn to only accept ‘friends’ on their social networking sites that they already know in real life (Part 1)

Begin by asking students about the kinds of things they post online. “What are some of the things you talk about with your friends online? If you have a profile, what kind of personal information do you have on it? Who is on your friends list? Have your parents seen your page? What are some of your screen names?”

Ask students to download the ‘Post-to-be-Private’ worksheet from ManageBac. Share your screen with students. Tell them you will display a profile from a social networking site that is set to private – these are displayed on their worksheets. Have students read the shared profile. Allow time for students to decide whether to accept this person as a “friend” on their own profile. They write down why they would or would not befriend this person on their worksheet.

Students watch ‘Post-to-be-Private’ and discuss what happens in the video. “What information about Allie does Slick find on her profile? What would you do differently if you were in Allie’s situation? How can Allie better protect herself online in the future?”

Students record their answers to these questions directly on their worksheet.

Part 2 if there is time:

Learning Goal: Students learn to only accept ‘friends’ on their social networking sites that they already know in real life. (This lesson is posted over two days to allow for spelling bee interruptions)

Review with students what was covered in the last class. Students will need their ‘Post-to-be-Private’ worksheet that they downloaded yesterday. Continue the conversation by asking, “What are some positive aspects of social networking sites? What is friending? Why do people want to build up their friends list? What rules should be followed when adding ‘friends’ on social networking sites. Students record their thinking and the ideas of others on the worksheet. Discuss as a class the risks and guidelines that can be set when accepting someone as an online friend. Make sure students understand that they must know people in real life in order to accept them as an online friend.

Return to the online profiles that the lesson began with yesterday. Reveal each accepted and not accepted new friend’s actual identity. Allow students to discuss what they see.

Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Instruct students to download Things You Might Post Online from ManageBac. Have students draw an “X” next to anything that is not okay to post online and discuss why it is inappropriate to post. Have groups share their answers. Have students suggest ways they can avoid these mistakes and maintain their privacy on the Internet. Worksheets are uploaded to ManageBac by 8 p.m. on Friday evening.

Students then write a persuasive letter to help a fictional friend realise the potential dangers of using social networking sites.

Work that is not completed during class time will need to be completed as homework. Students should put more focus into reading at this time. It is an expectation that students are reading between 30 and 60 minutes per day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out so I can clarify and assist.
