A note about Year Ahead Day…
Dear SJA Lower School (JK to Grade 6) Families,
An annual event in the Lower School is our highly anticipated Year-Ahead Day. Students look forward to this fun tradition at St. Jude’s Academy where they get to skip ahead and spend the day in the next grade. Teachers will let students know who their Year-Ahead Day teacher is at the end of day on Friday, February 7, 2020.
Please note that the placement for this day does not indicate class placement for the following school year.
Sincerely,
The SJA Lower School Team

Music – We started the day by having music with Mr. Oliver, which you can read about on his blog (https://mrolivermusicclass.blogspot.com).
Before we started our lesson, Joshua showed the class a map that he had created using google maps and a panoramic photo. He wanted a map that more accurately portrayed the earth, and so he created his own! What an excellent example of action – great work, Joshua!
Inquiry into Canada in the World – We took up our homework questions from yesterday, and then we did an activity on merging different types of maps.
Students explored section ‘B’ of lesson 2 on map merging and completed the questions with this activity, which we will take up tomorrow.

French – After this, the students had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).
Inquiry into Canada in the World – We started the afternoon by watching a video done by Jimmy Kimmel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRh1zXFKC_o. We discussed the importance of being a globally aware citizen and being internationally minded.
After this, we completed an activity. Students were given a group of photographs and the headings ‘Political’, ‘Economic’, ‘Physical’, and ‘Social’. With no context, they had to sort these photos. They then came up with criteria that makes each of these photos fit into that category.
After doing this, we examined what makes each of these categories what they are.
· Physical: refers to the physical landscape of the earth.
· Economic: refers to forms of trade, work, or any money related activities.
· Political: refers to government activities, laws, or any symbols related to these ideas.
· Social: refers to people and the cultures, beliefs, and traditions that define them.
We looked at these ‘PEPS’ features and discussed how a country is defined by these. When you are looking at how developed a country is, you examine these categories to determine this.
After this, we discussed imports and exports.
IMPORTS - all goods and services which a country buys from another country. These are products that come into the country.
EXPORTS - all goods and services which a country sells to another country. There are products that exit (or leave) a country.
Inquiry into Math – Today, we began looking at congruent figures.
Congruent: A figure that is congruent is the same shape, and same size (all corresponding side lengths and angles are equal).
Homework:
We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
Mr. Conte
