I hope everyone is having a fantastic week so far. I can’t believe this week is almost over. We are getting closer and closer to March Break…
March Break is quickly approaching …
A few quick reminders:
· Tomorrow is Day 2.
· Aftercare invoices for the month of January have come out and were due Saturday, February 15th, 2020. Any questions can be directed to Ms. Chiappetta at echiappetta@stjudesacademy.com
· The lunch site is now open for the month of March! It will be open until Wednesday, February 26th at 3:00 p.m. sharp. The special for the month is French Toast with Whipped Cream and Syrup. French – We started the day by having French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).
Music – Then, the students had music with Mr. Oliver, which you can read about on his blog (https://mrolivermusicclass.blogspot.com).
Inquiry into Language – Today, we looked at using persuasive language in our writing one last time. Over the weekend, students will write a practice assessment. They will use a checklist to ensure that their writing has all the necessary pieces. I will give them feedback on Monday, and we will write the post-assessment on Wednesday next week.
Inquiry into Math – We took up our second review in preparation for our test tomorrow.
Inquiry into Canada in the World – We began examining the Human Development Index (HDI). This is the measure of the quality of life of a nation’s people. We use this to compare between nations and determine which nations are developed and which are developing. The closer a country is to 1.0, the higher the quality of life and the closer to ‘0’, the lower the quality of life.
This is based on three key features:
1. Life expectancy – average life of a child born today
2. Knowledge – How many people can read, write, go to school
3. Standard of living – Average earning per person per year
We looked at key defining features in developed and developing nations. In a developed nation, things like wealth, ability to afford food, ability to afford shelter, access to health care, access to education, strength of the economy, access to technology are higher. They are lower in developing nations. Something like population growth would be higher in developing nations and lower in developed ones.
We looked at the world as a global village and talked about “the lucky ones” who are fortunate to have access to all of these different things.
This is a very large conversation as we will be moving on to the summative next week, which heavily centres around examining the HDI of developing nations.
Art – At the end of the day, we did more work on our Viking art. Some people worked on creating their horizon, some worked on their Viking ship and sails, and some worked on finishing their horizon. We’re hoping to have these done tomorrow.
Homework:
We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
Mr. Conte
