I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! Tomorrow is our in-class speech competition in Grade 6. It is imperative that everyone is here tomorrow for 9 a.m.
A reminder regarding our upcoming speech competition – it’s this week…
A note about Year Ahead Day…
Dear SJA Lower School (JK to Grade 6) Families,
An annual event in the Lower School is our highly anticipated Year-Ahead Day. Students look forward to this fun tradition at St. Jude’s Academy where they get to skip ahead and spend the day in the next grade. Teachers will let students know who their Year-Ahead Day teacher is at the end of day on Friday, February 7, 2020.
Please note that the placement for this day does not indicate class placement for the following school year.
Sincerely,
The SJA Lower School Team
And a reminder about re-registration…
Dear SJA Families,
Just a reminder that the SJA re-registration process is underway. To reserve your child’s 2020-2021 place at St. Jude’s Academy, complete and return your child’s re-registration forms and payment to Reception by Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 4:00 pm.
After this date and time, any available grade-level spaces will be open to new families on waitlists.
In addition, the deadline for our priority enrolment into our JK Program is Friday, January 17, 2020, a letter is attached with more information.
If you have any questions regarding the forms or next steps, please contact our Admissions Team.

Inquiry into Math – Today, we started our new unit in geometry. We started off by reviewing a few basic concepts:
First, we looked at the types of angles:
An acute angle is less than 90o.
A right angle is 90o.
An obtuse angle is more than 90o, but less than 180o.
A reflex angle is more than 180o.
Then, we looked at the ways we classify different types of triangles. They can be classified by side length or by angles.
Side Length:
Equilateral: All sides are equal length.
Isosceles: Two side are equal length.
Scalene: No sides are equal length.
Angles:
Acute: All angles are less than 90o.
Right: One angle is 90o.
Obtuse: One angle is greater than 90o.
We practiced two different ways of sketching triangles. First, when you are given three side lengths – let’s say you’re trying to draw triangle ABC…
1. Draw the line segment BC.
2. From point ‘B’, set your compass to the distance you want your next line to be and draw a small arc above point ‘B’. All points on this arc are the set distance you started with.
3. From point ‘C’, set your compass to the distance you want your last line to be and draw a small arc above point ‘C’. All points on this arc are the set distance you started with.
4. Ensure that these two arcs intersect. Where they intersect, that is point ‘A’.
5. Mark this point and draw lines from ‘B’ to ‘A’ and ‘C’ to ‘A’.
You can also draw a triangle with two angles and the side length inside of it…
1. Draw the line segment BC.
2. At ‘B’, measure your first angle and extend the line toward that angle.
3. At ‘C’, measure your second angle and extend that line toward that angle.
4. Where these two lines intersect is point ‘A’.
5. Mark this point and draw lines from ‘B’ to ‘A’ and ‘C’ to ‘A’.
After this, we talked about polygons and how we classify figures:
Polygon: A closed figure with sides that are line segments. Exactly 2 sides meet at each vertex – the sides only intersect at the vertices.
Regular Polygon: A polygon where all sides and angles are equal. These have both line and rotational symmetry.
Irregular Polygon: Any polygon that is not regular.
Convex Polygon: A polygon where all angles are less than 180o.
Concave Polygon: A polygon where at least one angle is greater than 180o.
We completed a cut-and-paste activity to show what we learned about different polygons.
Students have homework tonight, but this is due Wednesday as tomorrow is our in-class speech competition.
French – After this, the students had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).
Gym – After recess and lunch, the students had gym with Mr. Orr, which you can read about on his blog (http://tysonorr.blogspot.com).
Inquiry into Language – Students separated into groups of 4. In these groups, students heard each other’s speeches and provided feedback using the speech competition rubric. This was in preparation for tomorrow’s in-class speech competition.
We spent the remainder of the afternoon working on speeches and practicing for tomorrow.
Homework:
We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
Mr. Conte
