Wednesday, April 17th

I hope everyone is having a great week now that the weather is getting better. A reminder that Friday and Monday are no school, so after tomorrow, we start a 4-day weekend! Tomorrow is Easter Spirit day, so students are encouraged to dress in pastel colours or in Easter related clothes. Any students not participating are expected to come in their full winter uniform. Summer uniforms start next week.

First and foremost – messages for parents.

A message from one of the exhibition groups in grade 6:

Donate to people who are homeless

Hi!! Our names are Mona, Joana, and Shivam.

We are doing a project called Exhibition where we choose a topic we are interested in and want to research more about in order to make a positive difference in our world. We chose the topic of homelessness because we do not want anyone to be without their basic needs. Every person has the right to have a home and food to eat and clothing to wear.
We are collecting donations so that we can donate them to Angela’s Place, a homeless shelter right here in Mississauga.
You can donate:
  • Non perishable food
  • Clothing (for all ages such as Pants, shirts, hats ,shoes and more)
  • Toiletries (mouthwash, feminine products, toothpaste, toothbrush, and deodorant)
  • Seasonal clothing
  • Baby formula
  • Diapers
  • Baby products

Reason why we are doing this= Our plan is to help people who are homeless who need food and clothing and any other useful materials. After collecting these materials, we are going to donate all these items to a shelter called “Angela's Place (45 Glenn Hawthorne Blvd, Mississauga, ON L5R 4J9).

Please bring in items by Tuesday April 23, 2019 to Ms. Jaskolka's class (Room 30)

Thank you so much for making the world a better place!

Inquiry into Language – Today, we completed our literature circles for week 4! We’re almost done our literature circles for Hatchet.

2.    Connector – Connect what is happening in the text to your own life, current world events, and other books, movies, or television shows.
3.    Literary Critic – Choose a short passage from the book and analyse why it is important to the story.
4.    Discussion Moderator – Come up with questions to fuel a group discussion.
5.    Word Wizard – Define and explain new or interesting words.

Inquiry into Math – Today, we continued our transformational geometry unit by reviewing the second of three basic movements on a grid – reflections! A reflection is when a figure is reflected in a mirror line(a line in which a figure is reflected) to create a congruent image. For example, if you have the point A(5, 3) and you reflect it in the vertical mirror line through the horizontal axis at 7, the new point would be A’(9, 3).

After a reflection, a figure and its image:
·      are congruent (same size and shape but not always same orientation)
·      usually face opposite ways
·      are the exact same distance from the mirror line
When a figure is reflected, all of the points are reflected by the same mirror line. For example, if you have a triangle with points A, B, and C, and you reflect point A in the horizontal mirror line through the vertical axis at 4, points B & C must be reflected in the same mirror line.

You use the ’ symbol (prime) to show that a point has been altered from its original place.

Imagine you have a figure on a grid and you reflect your figure in the horizontal mirror line through the vertical axis at 8.

We spent the class completing a few questions in class. Tomorrow, we will start looking at rotating figures on a grid.

After second recess and lunch, we rehearsed for our upcoming The Wizard of Ozproduction.

Inquiry into Biodiversity – Students continued working on their summative tasks for biodiversity. The final due date is Friday, April 26th.
