· Pick-a-time forms were sent home last week for the upcoming student-led conferences on Thursday, April 4th. The website opened yesterday morning at 10:00 a.m.
Inquiry into Language – Today, we continued our second week of literature circles. Some students worked on reading chapters 5 & 6, while others worked on their role for the week.
1. Summariser – Summarise the three chapters for the week.
2. Connector – Connect what is happening in the text to your own life, current world events, and other books, movies, or television shows.
3. Literary Critic – Choose a short passage from the book and analyse why it is important to the story.
4. Discussion Moderator – Come up with questions to fuel a group discussion.
5. Word Wizard – Define and explain new or interesting words.
Inquiry into Biodiversity – Today, we began discussing the animal kingdom. We started learning about the invertebrates in the animal kingdom, which is those without a backbone. We learned about arthropods as well. We developed our own tree classification system for some of the invertebrates we’ve encountered.
Inquiry into Math – Today during math, we explored how to estimate percentages. Let’s say you want to find 40% of 19. Here’s what you do:
1. Find a friendly number. (19 à20)
2. Record the percent as a fraction (40% is 40/100 = 2/5)
3. Use your fraction to calculate your answer. Divide by your denominator and multiply by your numerator. (20/5 = 4 X 2 = 8)
Therefore, 40% of 19 is about 8.
Let’s say you want to know what percent 11 of 49 is.
1. Find friendly numbers. (11à10, 49à50)
2. Turn your fraction into a fraction out of 100. (10/50 = 20/100)
3. Convert your fraction to a percent. (20/100 = 20%)
Therefore, 11/49 is about 20%.
For homework:
· MMS Pg. 124-125 (due tomorrow)
