Inquiry into Math – Today, we continued our unit on Decimals by learning how we round decimals. The process is very simple. When you go to round any decimals, you start by checking the number that follows on the right. If the number is between 0 & 4, you do not change the number. If the number is between 5 & 9, you round your number up.
For example, the number 1.153. If we are rounding to the nearest whole number, the whole number is one; the number following is a 1, which is between 0 & 4, so you do not change it – the answer is 1. If we are rounding to the nearest tenth, the number is 1.1; the number following is a 5, which is between 5 & 9, so you round up – the answer is 1.2. If we are rounding to the nearest hundredth, the number is 1.15; the number following is a 3, which is between 0 & 4, so you keep the same number – the answer is 1.15.
