French – In the afternoon, we had French with Mme. Rawan, which you can read about on her blog (https://mmerawansja.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Math – Today, we continued our inquiry into decimals by exploring thousandths, and comparing and ordering decimals.

In the past, we have organized large numbers into place value chart. Today, we did the same with decimals. It works almost the same. You write the numbers in the order they appear, paying close attention to where the decimal is located. The first place after the decimal is the “tenths” column. It is called this because when written as a fraction, it is written as a number out of ten. The second place after the decimal is the “hundredths” column. It is called this because when written as a fraction, it is written as a number out of one hundred. The third place after the decimal is the “thousandths” column. It is called this because when written as a fraction, it is written as a number out of one thousand.

For example, the number 1.425 has 4 tenths, 2 hundredths, and 5 thousandths. In expanded form, it is written as 1 + 0.4 + 0.02 + 0.005.

When comparing decimals, it works exactly the same as comparing large numbers. You start comparing in the first column, if the numbers are the same, you move to the next column. You continue to do this until you have a higher or lower number, which allows you to order them properly. For example, 1.316 and 1.319 – the ones column, tenths column, and hundredths column are the same. The thousandths column is different, so the one with the higher number (9) is larger than the other.

Inquiry into Ancient Civilizations – We continued to work on our artefacts for our summative tasks! Tomorrow is the last day to work on summative tasks as they are due Thursday. We will be working pretty much all day tomorrow!
