Remember to update your parents about all we are discussing during our inquiry unit. They are the most important ‘trusted adults’ in your lives.

A few messages from SJA:

Daily Challenge – t’s time to get outside and have some fun! This week we’re giving you a list of 7 activities – to win you need to do 4 of them. You choose your challenges and we’ll judge the winner.

We’re also changing up the prize! The winner gets to choose any video game of their choice (so long as we can order on Amazon)! We’ll have it shipped to your house as soon as possible!

Don’t forget to send your entries to Mr. Neal: sneal@stjudesacademy.com

Here are your activity choices:
·      Draw a picture of your favourite WINTER activity with sidewalk chalk on the sidewalk or driveway.
·      Draw a hopscotch board and do it forwards and backwards (if it’s rainy or you want to do it indoors, you can always draw your hopscotch board with masking tape on the floor)
·      Kick a ball into a net (don’t worry, a net can any two things marking a 5 foot spread) – but here’s the challenge: do it from as far back as possible. Tell us how far back you were when it when in!
·      Take a spoon and an egg (feel free to use hardboiled, but not necessary). Run 15 feet in one direction then back again while balancing the egg in the spoon.
·      Neighbourhood search.  With you parent’s permission (and hopefully with their attendance) go for a walk and take pictures of you with the following things:
·      A stop sign,
·      Your street name sign
·      A blue flower,
·      Something with a tail,
·      Something round,
·      A fire hydrant
·      It’s LIMBO time! Get help from parents or siblings: do some limbo and show us how low you can go!
·      Is it a rainy day? Put on your rain gear and go jump in some puddles!  Extra points to the students who makes the biggest splash!
·      Bonus Idea (in case it doesn’t rain): Fly a kite! Let’s see how high you can make it go!!

Have fun everyone! I can’t wait to see what you do.

Novel Study

Learning Goal: Students will try to understand a character by reflecting on what the author has revealed so far in the text.

Remind students to keep thinking of ideas for their art project. Here is another idea of how this can be done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkVU-mJqTHQ  - Using paint and clay

Meet as a whole class to discuss their responses to Chapter 6 questions. Students are then assigned to read Chapter 7, answer discussion questions, and participate in activities. Today’s activity is a reflection on events that occurred. Any incomplete work must be completed as homework.

Students may choose to join a breakout room where students read silently, or they may choose to join a breakout room where students take turn reading aloud.

Inquiry into My Digital Footprint

Learning Goal: Understand my responsibility in creating safe environments for myself, my friends, my family, and people I may encounter both in a virtual and face-to-face setting.

Remind students of the central idea, lines of inquiry, and key concepts for this unit:

Central Idea: Being knowledgeable and engaging in safe practices can enable people to deal with challenging social situations.

Concepts: Perspective, Responsibility

Related Concepts:
Values, boundaries,
Initiative

Lines of Inquiry:
·       Digital literacy and ethical practices (Responsibility)
·       Personal and inter-personal skills that promote positive interaction (Perspective)
·       Personal safety (Responsibility)

Discuss the meaning of:
  • Literacy
  • Digital literacy
  • Ethics
  • Digital ethics
  • Each line of inquiry

Tell students that for their final report about novel study, they will make connections between the lines of inquiry, the Real World Safety Pledge, and the characters in the story. As they read, they should identify when character behave in a way that does not promote positive interactions, or when they put their personal safety at risk. They should also identify when the do not adhere to the Real World Safety Pledge. Make this a discussion point during novel study daily discussions.

Introduction

Ask students: Have you ever seen someone being bullied at school or online? Did you think there was anything you could do to stop it? Define cyberbullying and bystanders. Cyberbullies use the Internet to tease, humiliate, or harass someone online.

Bystanders are people who see the cyberbullying happen, but don’t get involved.

Ask students: Who do you think has more power – cyberbullies or bystanders? Allow time for discussion.

Activity

Play through the interactive comic Stand By or Stand Up? as a class. Then allow students to break into groups and try this on their own. When students are finished, discuss the choices they made and how that affected the comic’s outcome.

Ask students the following questions for discussion: How do you think being bullied made Katie feel? At what points in the comic did Carlos have the power to help Katie?

Have your students complete the quiz to evaluate their understanding of cyberbullies and bystanders. When students are finished, go through their answers together and correct any misconceptions about cyberbullying and bystanders.

Summarize the lesson and remind students:  As a bystander you may not feel you should get involved, but remember creating a safer Internet is everyone’s responsibility

100-Word Story

Students will then produce an illustration to accompany the story. Students may choose any medium for the illustration. For example, the illustration can be done on paper with pencils, or markers, or pastels, or paints, etc. The paper must be unlined. Students may use a drawing app for their illustration. The illustration must:
·       use colour
·       enhance the story
·       use the elements and principles of design (e.g. colour, shape, line, contrast, value, etc) – students will choose their own focus
·       be best work

Once students are done, they are to take a photograph of, or scan the picture, and submit it to me. Ensure photos are of a good quality and are centered on the picture.

The good copy of the story and picture are due by end of day tomorrow, Tuesday, June 2nd.

Work that is not completed during class time will need to be completed as homework. Students should put more focus into reading at this time. It is an expectation that students are reading between 30 and 60 minutes per day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out so I can clarify and assist.
