Monday, June 1st, Day 5

Good morning everyone!

We will begin the day on Discord in the Grade 6 General Meeting room at 8:45am where we will review how our day will run today.

Can you believe that today is the first day of June! How time flies. We have one more month left of school! Let’s give it our all. I am looking forward to hearing about what you did this weekend!
Congratulations to Gokul and Ahil for placing 2nd and 3rd in the inter-school spelling bee last Friday!

Remember to update your parents about all we are discussing during our inquiry unit. They are the most important ‘trusted adults’ in your lives.

A few messages from SJA:

Daily Challenge – t’s time to get outside and have some fun! This week we’re giving you a list of 7 activities – to win you need to do 4 of them. You choose your challenges and we’ll judge the winner.

We’re also changing up the prize! The winner gets to choose any video game of their choice (so long as we can order on Amazon)! We’ll have it shipped to your house as soon as possible!

Don’t forget to send your entries to Mr. Neal: sneal@stjudesacademy.com

Here are your activity choices:
·      Draw a picture of your favourite WINTER activity with sidewalk chalk on the sidewalk or driveway.
·      Draw a hopscotch board and do it forwards and backwards (if it’s rainy or you want to do it indoors, you can always draw your hopscotch board with masking tape on the floor)
·      Kick a ball into a net (don’t worry, a net can any two things marking a 5 foot spread) – but here’s the challenge: do it from as far back as possible. Tell us how far back you were when it when in!
·      Take a spoon and an egg (feel free to use hardboiled, but not necessary). Run 15 feet in one direction then back again while balancing the egg in the spoon.
·      Neighbourhood search.  With you parent’s permission (and hopefully with their attendance) go for a walk and take pictures of you with the following things:
·      A stop sign,
·      Your street name sign
·      A blue flower,
·      Something with a tail,
·      Something round,
·      A fire hydrant
·      It’s LIMBO time! Get help from parents or siblings: do some limbo and show us how low you can go!
·      Is it a rainy day? Put on your rain gear and go jump in some puddles!  Extra points to the students who makes the biggest splash!
·      Bonus Idea (in case it doesn’t rain): Fly a kite! Let’s see how high you can make it go!!

Have fun everyone! I can’t wait to see what you do.

And also, don’t forget that Track & Field is taking place this week during gym classes!

Inquiry into My Digital Footprint

Learning Goal: Students learn to only accept ‘friends’ on their social networking sites that they already know in real life (Part 1)

Begin by asking students about the kinds of things they post online. “What are some of the things you talk about with your friends online? If you have a profile, what kind of personal information do you have on it? Who is on your friends list? Have your parents seen your page? What are some of your screen names?”

Ask students to download the ‘Post-to-be-Private’ worksheet from ManageBac. Share your screen with students. Tell them you will display a profile from a social networking site that is set to private – these are displayed on their worksheets. Have students read the shared profile. Allow time for students to decide whether to accept this person as a “friend” on their own profile. They write down why they would or would not befriend this person on their worksheet.

Students watch ‘Post-to-be-Private’ and discuss what happens in the video. “What information about Allie does Slick find on her profile? What would you do differently if you were in Allie’s situation? How can Allie better protect herself online in the future?”

Students record their answers to these questions directly on their worksheet.

Part 2 if there is time:

Learning Goal: Students learn to only accept ‘friends’ on their social networking sites that they already know in real life. (This lesson is posted over two days to allow for spelling bee interruptions)

Review with students what was covered in the last class. Students will need their ‘Post-to-be-Private’ worksheet that they downloaded yesterday. Continue the conversation by asking, “What are some positive aspects of social networking sites? What is friending? Why do people want to build up their friends list? What rules should be followed when adding ‘friends’ on social networking sites. Students record their thinking and the ideas of others on the worksheet. Discuss as a class the risks and guidelines that can be set when accepting someone as an online friend. Make sure students understand that they must know people in real life in order to accept them as an online friend.

Return to the online profiles that the lesson began with yesterday. Reveal each accepted and not accepted new friend’s actual identity. Allow students to discuss what they see.

Divide students into groups of 3 or 4. Instruct students to download Things You Might Post Online from ManageBac. Have students draw an “X” next to anything that is not okay to post online and discuss why it is inappropriate to post. Have groups share their answers. Have students suggest ways they can avoid these mistakes and maintain their privacy on the Internet. Worksheets are uploaded to ManageBac by 8 p.m. on Friday evening.

Students then write a persuasive letter to help a fictional friend realise the potential dangers of using social networking sites.

Novel Study

Learning Goal: Students will consider the points of view of characters in the text.

Tell students that their final art project for the term will be a clay painting that relates to Bridge to Terabithia. Show them examples to help them understand what a clay painting looks like. Ask them to begin visualizing what it looks like when Jess and Leslie are in Terabithia. Their painting will be based on a fantastical forest scene in this magical kingdom using each student’s own imagination. Tell them to really begin to visualize what this may look like as they read and to begin thinking of ideas. They may begin their own research of forest scenes to prepare.

Here is one idea of how this can be done: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAZIBqo3cAM – Using clay only

Meet as a whole class to discuss their responses to Chapter 5 questions. Students are then assigned to read Chapter 6, answer discussion questions, and participate in activities. Today’s activity is a journal entry from the point of view of one of the characters. Any incomplete work must be completed as homework
Students may choose to join a breakout room where students read silently, or they may choose to join a breakout room where students take turns reading aloud.

100-Word Story

Students will then produce an illustration to accompany the story. Students may choose any medium for the illustration. For example, the illustration can be done on paper with pencils, or markers, or pastels, or paints, etc. The paper must be unlined. Students may use a drawing app for their illustration. The illustration must:
·       use colour
·       enhance the story
·       use the elements and principles of design (e.g. colour, shape, line, contrast, value, etc) – students will choose their own focus
·       be best work

Once students are done, they are to take a photograph of, or scan the picture, and submit it to me. Ensure photos are of a good quality and are centered on the picture.

The good copy of the story and picture are due by end of day tomorrow, Tuesday, June 2nd.

Work that is not completed during class time will need to be completed as homework. Students should put more focus into reading at this time. It is an expectation that students are reading between 30 and 60 minutes per day.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out so I can clarify and assist.
