Monday, December 3rd

I hope you all had a nice, relaxing weekend.

A couple of quick reminders:
·      Tomorrow is Day 2.
·      Permission forms and waiver forms were sent home today for our upcoming ski trips in the new year. These must be returned and signed by Tuesday, December 11thfor those attending.
·      The website to book times to meet for the student led conferences is open; I look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday.
This morning, we had our awards for our November Learner Profile – Thinkers. Congratulations to all of the winners this month!

Right after this, we went curling. The students were so sad to leave; they actually wanted to stay in the cold! We’ll be back next year.

When we got back to school, we had some lunch, and then practiced for the Christmas concert. The students know they should be practicing at home. We also discussed and finalized our wardrobe of PJs and funky hair dos!

Inquiry into Ancient Civilizations – Today, we said goodbye to our unit on ancient civilizations by filling out the ‘L’ section of our KWL chart. We knew, we wanted to know more, and we learned.

Inquiry into Math – For math today, we took up our mid-chapter review. We also reviewed how to properly round for decimals, and how to estimate the sums and differences of decimals.

When you go to round any decimals, you start by checking the number that follows on the right. If the number is between 0 & 4, you do not change the number. If the number is between 5 & 9, you round your number up.

For example, the number 1.153. If we are rounding to the nearest whole number, the whole number is one; the number following is a 1, which is between 0 & 4, so you do not change it – the answer is 1. If we are rounding to the nearest tenth, the number is 1.1; the number following is a 5, which is between 5 & 9, so you round up – the answer is 1.2. If we are rounding to the nearest hundredth, the number is 1.15; the number following is a 3, which is between 0 & 4, so you keep the same number – the answer is 1.15.

Let’s say you have the numbers 5.657 & 1.231.

For addition…
·      You can round them to the nearest whole numbers (6 + 1 = 7)
·      You can round one of the numbers to the nearest whole number (6 + 1.231 = 7.231)
·      You can round to the tenths (5.7 + 1.2 = 6.9)
·      You can round to the hundredths (5.66 + 1.23 = 6.89)
For subtraction…
·      You can round the second number to the nearest whole number (5.657 – 1 = 4.657)
·      You can round to the tenths (5.7 – 1.2 = 4.5)
·      You can round to the hundredths (5.66 – 1.23 = 4.43)
Inquiry into the Human Body – We worked on our title page for our new unit of inquiry, the Human Body.

For homework:
·      Math practice sheet (due tomorrow)
·      Read your book for 20 minutes
·      Term One reflection sheet (due Wednesday)
·      Human Body title page (due tomorrow)
·      Practice for the Christmas concert
All homework for the day is placed here, but time may have been given in class to complete this work.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email, and I will respond as quickly as possible.
