Tuesday, September 25th

Good afternoon everyone!

It’s Tuesday. It was a pretty gloomy day, but we definitely made the best of it in grade five.

Today, we met with our reading buddies in Ms. Brew’s class. The grade fives always love reading to their buddies!

After reading buddies, we went into our inquiry of math. Yesterday, we reviewed addition and subtraction and learned how to work with larger numbers. Today, we started out with multiplying large numbers. Our end goal is to be able to multiply a four digit number by a two digit number. We started out with some simple questions on the board.

Then the questions got a little bit harder…

When multiplying, you always multiply the bottom number by the top number. Start by multiplying the ones number to the ones number. Same as addition, you write the number in the ones column at the bottom and the number in the tens column above the next column. Then multiply the ones to the tens column, and add the number you carried if any. You continue until you have multiplied the ones column of the bottom number to all of the numbers in the top number. Then, you write a 0 below your first number below. This is because we are moving on to the tens column, we need to ensure we are working in the tens column. The ones column is 0. Once you have your two answers, you add them together for your final answer.

After this, we worked on questions 6ef, 7fg, and 8 out of our text either alone or with others.

We regrouped with our answers and reviewed any possible errors.

Right after this, we did technology. We started working with Microsoft word and learned how to change font, change font size, and change spacing. You just have to click on the drop down menu in the ‘Home’ toolbar at the top and choose!

In the afternoon, we had French, which you can read about on Mme. Rawan’s blog (link on the left).

Inquiry into Language – We started our research for International Day – we are researching Greece. Everyone was so excited to research that they did not want to go outside and went to the library instead!

Inquiry into Matter – We watched a video from Bill Nye the Science Guy to consolidate our learning on matter. We filled in a worksheet, and took up the answers as a class.

After, we had a little competition where students had to go around the class, find the questions, and record their answers. Theta was the first team to bring me all 20 correct answers! Great job!

For homework:

A couple of quick reminders:
  • ·         Terry Fox forms were sent home in the student agendas – we are trying to raise as much money as possible for cancer research.
  • ·         Forms for afterschool programs in October were sent home in agendas on Friday – they are due back no later than TOMORROW Wednesday, September 26th.
  • ·         A letter was sent home regarding the Caribou math contest on Friday. This is an optional contest for those who wish to take part in a math challenge. Please feel free to read through and email with any questions.
  • ·         A letter was sent home on Friday regarding upcoming unit phone calls. Please fill out and return to me by sometime next week so I can know when/how best to contact you.
  • ·         Tomorrow is casual day! Students who are participating are reminded to dress in their casual clothing.
  • ·         Tomorrow is our bake sale – students can bring nut free treats (cannot contain traces of nuts) and money to purchase items after their lunch is finished.
  • ·         Thursday is our Terry Fox run – students come dressed in their gym uniforms all day.
  • ·         Friday is Orange shirt day – Students can come dressed in an orange shirt to remember those students who were taken from their homes and sent to residential schools. They may wear casual bottoms and shoes if they come in an orange shirt. Otherwise, it is full uniform.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email, and I will respond as quickly as possible.
