Good afternoon everyone!
It’s Monday – I hope everyone had a
fantastic weekend. There is a chill of fall in the air…
We started our morning with gym and
music, which you can read about on Mr. Orr’s and Mr. Oliver’s blogs (links on
the left).
In the afternoon, we had French,
which you can read about on Mme. Rawan’s blog (link on the left).
Inquiry into Math – Today, we
continued our inquiry into math by reviewing how to add and subtract large
whole numbers, and how to add several large whole numbers.
Addition: You start by adding all
of the numbers in the ones column. Then you add all of the numbers in the tens
column, then the hundreds column, and then the thousands column. If the answer
is a single digit number, you put that number at the bottom of the column you are
adding. If the answer is a two digit number, you put the number in the ones
column at the bottom of the column you are adding, and you put the number in
the tens column at the top of the next column you are adding.
Subtraction (Simple): You subtract
all of the numbers from right to left in their own columns. You subtract the
bottom ones number from the top ones number, the bottom tens number from the
top tens number, the bottom hundreds number from the top hundreds number. You continue
this until your columns are done.
Subtraction (Complex): This
subtraction is almost the same as simple subtraction, with the exception that
some numbers may not compute correctly. When you come across a situation where
a smaller number is subtracting a larger number (i.e. 4 – 5), you need to “borrow”
from the next number. In the example below, you can’t do 3 – 9, so you take one
from the next number over (the 4, which becomes a 3). You take the one you
borrowed and the 3 becomes, 13. Since your question is 13 – 9, you get 4. You
continue this until the question is complete.
You can check your answers after
subtracting by adding the answer you get to the smaller number. It should give
you the larger number you started with.
We worked on q few questions from our books and did some collaborative board work.
Inquiry into Language – After our
second recess and lunch, we came back and did spelling. Today, we reviewed
letters that make the ‘f’ sound. The
four sets of letters that can make the ‘f’ sound are: ‘f’ as in forest, ‘ff’ as in afford, ‘gh’ as in rough, and ‘ph’ as in Aphrodite.
After this, we assigned groups and
topics we will be covering for International day. We are a small class, so we
will all have to cover a little bit more, but we have a lot of time in class!
For homework:
A couple of quick reminders:
- · Tomorrow and Wednesday we are having a bake sale during recesses tomorrow and Wednesday - students can bring money for the bake sale and bring in treats to sell. ALL items need to be nut free (cannot contain traces of nuts either).
- · Terry Fox forms were sent home in the student agendas – we are trying to raise as much money as possible for cancer research.
- · Forms for afterschool programs in October were sent home in agendas on Friday – they are due back no later than Wednesday, September 26th.
- · A letter was sent home regarding the Caribou math contest on Friday. This is an optional contest for those who wish to take part in a math challenge. Please feel free to read through and email with any questions.
- · A letter was sent home on Friday regarding upcoming unit phone calls. Please fill out and return to me by sometime next week so I can know when/how best to contact you.
As always, please feel free to
reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email, and I will respond as
quickly as possible.
Mr. Conte
