Thursday, September 20th

Good afternoon everyone!

It’s Thursday – almost Friday!

We started our morning with gym and music, which you can read about on Mr. Orr’s and Mr. Oliver’s blogs (links on the left).

Inquiry into Language – We took some time today to practice for our spelling test tomorrow.

In the afternoon, we had French, which you can read about on Mme. Rawan’s blog (link on the left).

Inquiry into Math – We continued our inquiry into math by discussing the order in which you complete operations in math. We began with an inquiry by trying a few questions. We accidentally ended up with a negative number!

Math drives us crazy...

We then discussed the acronym PEDMAS.
P – Parenthesis (Brackets)
E – Exponents
D – Division
M – Multiplication
A – Addition
S – Subtraction

For example, (4 + 5) – 3 x 3
First, you do 4 + 5 since it is in the brackets. 4 + 5 = 9
Then, you do 3 x 3 since it is multiplication. 3 x 3 = 9
Finally, you are left with 9 – 9, which is 0.

We will continue our inquiry tomorrow with some textbook questions. We have a challenge question for tonight.

Inquiry into Matter – Today, we did a few experiments for our inquiry into matter. We were inquiring into the concept of density. Density is a measure of how close particles are to one another in matter.

For our first experiment, we examined three beakers: one with air, one with water, and one with rocks. Of course, the rocks were the heaviest, then the water, and then the air. This is because they are more dense than the water, and the water is more dense than the air.

Our second experiment was called Oil and Water. In this experiment, we had two glasses – one with water, and one with oil. When the glass with water was placed on top of the glass with oil, the water and oil switched places! This is because oil is less dense than water.

Our last experiment was called Goo! In this experiment, we mixed corn starch and water. This creates a liquid solution that is so dense that it can behave like a solid.

A couple of quick reminders:
  • ·         Mr. Beresford and our athletic division have planned a trip to the golf range for our grade. This trip was included in the athletic fees for grade fives. A permission form was sent home to be signed – it is due back to me by September 24th.
  • ·         Terry Fox forms were sent home today in the student agendas.

As always, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email, and I will respond as quickly as possible.

Mr. Conte
