Thursday, September 13th

Good afternoon everyone!

Hope everybody is having a great week. It’s almost Friday!

Inquiry into Math – In the past few days we have been exploring and understanding large numbers. Now, we are working on comparing and organizing them. We started off with an activity.

The activity was to help us organize countries by area. Here is what we came up with:

After this, we reviewed our understanding of ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’. We made sure to use our strategies. Starting from the left hand side of our place value chart, we see the highest number in each column. If any two numbers are the same, we move to the next column.

For the rest of the morning, we worked on our math, and reviewed our comprehension questions for chapter one of Percy Jackson, and our fill in the blanks for our UOI.

Inquiry into Language – In the afternoon, we did a practice spelling test to warm up for tomorrow. We had a lot of high scores out there!

Inquiry into Matter – Today, we had another day of experiments and observation. We did three experiments today:

Experiment 1 was to explore the properties of solids. We discussed that solids have a fixed shape, and do not take the shape of any containers.

Experiment 2 was to explore the properties of gases. We discussed that gases do not have a fixed shape, and fill the space they are in. It is also important to note that you can change the volume for gases.

Experiment 3 was to explore the properties of liquids. Liquids take the shape of their container and keep a consistent volume.

In the later part of our afternoon, we had a discussion to start our technology section of the year. We started off discussing internet and social media safety, the effects of technology on our world, and why technology matters to us.

Inquiry into Language (cont’d) – We read the second chapter of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Our chapter was called "Three Old Ladies Knit the Socks of Death". We started our comprehension questions for this chapter as well.

For homework:
