Friday, September 21st

Good afternoon everyone!

Happy Fri-yay!

Inquiry into Language – We started our day with our spelling test for lesson two to get that right out of the way. Tests have been marked and returned home. All words that were spelling incorrectly are to be rewritten five times, and all tests need to be signed by a parent or guardian.

Right after our test, we jumped in chapter five of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

After this, we broke into our focus groups and worked on our comprehension questions for chapter five.

We took up the questions as a class. This weekend, students will be reading chapters 6 & 7, and will be completing the comprehension questions along with these chapters.

In the afternoon, we had French, which you can read about on Mme. Rawan’s blog (link on the left).

Inquiry into Math – We continued our inquiry into math by  continuing our discussion on the order in which you complete operations in math. We started off with some inquiry into our operations.

We reviewed the acronym PEDMAS.
P – Parenthesis (Brackets)
E – Exponents
D – Division
M – Multiplication
A – Addition
S – Subtraction

Today, we added new knowledge. We now know that once you have completed all of your parenthesis and exponents, you complete either multiplication (whichever occurs first) from left to right. The same goes for addition and subtraction. Once all other operations are completed, you complete your addition and subtraction from left to right – whichever occurs first.

For example:

3 x 4 ÷ 6
= 12 ÷ 6
= 2

Even though division is first in our acronym, multiplication appears first from left to right, so we do it first.

5 – 2 + 8
= 2 + 8
= 10

Even though addition is first in our acronym, subtraction appears first from left to right, so we do it first.

Inquiry into Matter – Today, we did an overall review of what we’ve learned in matter so far by completing a fill in the blank activity with group collaboration.

Right before this picture, someone said "Everyone make it look like you're doing work!"

Technology – We had our very first hands-on technology session today. This session was our first time using Typing Club, and we are starting to understand how to use the home row. If students want to practice at home, they can use this link: https://www.typingclub.com/sportal/program-3.game
