Good afternoon everyone!
We had a great day of inquiry in
grade five.
We started our day with gym with
Mr. Orr and music with Mr. Oliver. You can read about what they did in their
respective blogs (links are located on the left).
In the afternoon, we had French,
which you can read about on Mme. Rawan’s blog (link on the left).
Inquiry into Math – Today, we continued
our inquiry into prime and composite numbers.
Reminder: A prime number is a number that is only divisible by one and itself
(for example: 5). A composite number
is a number that is divisible by more numbers than one and itself (for example:
4). We also reviewed factors which
are numbers that can be multiplied to make a composite number (for example: 3 x
6 = 18). We took that knowledge then to discuss prime factors, which are prime
numbers that can be multiplied to give us a composite number (for example: 3 x
3 x 2 = 18).
We separated into focus groups and
completed questions one and four from our text. We then continued the discussion
as a class.
It is important to remember: all
even numbers are composite numbers (the only exception is the number two). This
is because all even numbers are divisible by two!
Tomorrow, we will continue our
inquiry into math by focusing on strategies for using mental math.
Inquiry into Language – Today, we
read chapter three of Percy Jackson and
the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. This chapter was called Grover Unexpectedly Loses His Pants – we
are starting to meet more of our mythical creatures that will carry out our adventure
through the book.
We do love our novel study –
everyone gets really into the book!
Inquiry into Matter – Today, we
continued our inquiry into matter by starting with some experiments.
We started with a little experiment
we call Hot and Cold Chocolate. In
this experiment, we took a full Aero bar, and placed the pieces into a beaker.
We then submerged the beaker in hot water and left it for a few minutes. When
we came back, the chocolate had melted from the solid state to the liquid
state.
After this, we transferred the
liquid to another beaker and placed it in the freezer.
When we took it out of the freezer
after a few minutes, the chocolate had solidified.
Our second experiment was called Elephant Toothpaste. In this experiment,
we mixed hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, green food colouring, yeast, and hot
water. When all of the items were mixed together, they caused a reaction that
caused foam to rise looking like elephant toothpaste!
After our inquiry, we went back to
our lesson and discussed reversible
changes and non-reversible changes.
A reversible change is a change where matter can change back to its original
state. A non-reversible change is a change where matter cannot change back to
its original state. We will continue our discussion reversible and
non-reversible changes tomorrow when we discuss physical and chemical changes.
For homework:
A couple of quick reminders:
- · Mr. Beresford and our athletic division have planned a trip to the golf range for our grade. This trip was included in the athletic fees for grade fives. A permission form was sent home to be signed – it is due back to me by September 24th.
- · Terry Fox forms were sent home today in the student agendas. We are aiming to raise as much as possible for cancer research!
As always, please feel free to
reach out to me with any questions or concerns by email, and I will respond as
quickly as possible.
