Wednesday, January 8th

I hope you all had a relaxing break. We’ve officially started back and are wasting no time in getting right back into our studies.

A few quick reminders:
·      Aftercare invoices for the month of December have come out and are due Wednesday, January 15th, 2020. Any questions can be directed to Ms. Chiappetta at echiappetta@stjudesacademy.com
·      Ski trip forms and waivers were due back. If you have not sent them in, please do this as soon as possible. Without these forms handed in, students will not be able to attend our ski trips. Our first ski trip is Wednesday, January 22nd.
·      Crawford Lake trip forms and payment ($27) are due back as soon as possible. This trip is taking place next Thursday, January 16th.
·      Speech packages and letters were sent home today for students to read and work on. Please have a read through the letters and sign them (let me know if you have any questions).

Inquiry into Explorers – We started the day working on our Haida art projects. Students chose a depiction of animals. Today, we worked on tracing and will be completing the colouring portion on Friday. Any unfinished tracing was sent home tonight.

French – After this, the students had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).

Gym – After recess and lunch, the students had gym with Mr. Orr, which you can read about on his blog (http://tysonorr.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Language – Today, we started working on speeches. We started by reading through the speech letter and going over the expectations for speeches. We looked through the package and the schedule in detail. This will help us stay on track and know where each of us lie throughout the process. Sticking to this schedule will help ensure no one becomes stressed or overwhelmed by the workload. The big point in Grade 6 is being able to write a counterargument.

We read an example of persuasive writing and reviewed the rubric and judges scoring card. After this, we looked through possible speech topic ideas. Then, we listened to a speech by Oprah Winfrey and read an article discussing what made the speech so strong (examples, repetition, and metaphors).

Students then worked on their brainstorms. The homework tonight is to discuss the contest, brainstorm, and package with their parents. Please sign the speech letters and help your child choose a topic for tomorrow’s class.

Inquiry into Math – We continued with our data management unit today. This weekend, students will complete a mid-unit review to solidify topics covered before the break. Our test is scheduled for next Friday, January 17th.

We began learning about stem-and-leaf plots. This is a system for organizing number sets. We start with a set of numbers:

Science Test Scores
64, 75, 89, 99, 58, 53, 69
66, 72, 81, 88, 67, 75, 86
52, 97, 77, 75, 57, 61, 85
94, 72, 81, 65, 78, 81, 93

Stem-and-leaf plots start with the stem on the left and the leaf on the right side of the chart. First, determine the highest and lowest numbers. The lowest number is 52 and the highest number is 99. Therefore, our stems will be 5-9. Once you know the stems, you go through the data one by one and find all the numbers with each stem in order and record the corresponding leaf. It is easiest when you go number by number. So for example, 52 would be recorded with a stem of ‘5’ and a leaf of ‘2’.

Science Test Scores
Stem
Leaf
5
2  3  7  8
6
1  4  5  6  7  9
7
2  2  5  5  5  7  8
8
1  1  1  5  6  8  9
9
3  4  7  9

Why do we use stem-and-leaf plots?
·      easy to create
·      don’t need a computer
·      easy to read the data as well as find mode, median and range
·      It is a good choice when the data sets are small.
·      working with numbers to organize your data

How can we use stem-and-leaf plots? à To calculate range and measures of central tendency and to analyze data?

What was the lowest score on the test? à 52 since it is the first number with the first stem.

What was the highest test score? à 99 since it is the last number with the last stem.

What was range of scores? à The range is the distance between the lowest and highest scores. 99 – 52 = 47, so the range is 47.

What is the median? à There are 28 scores in total, which is an even number. This means there will be two middle numbers. 28 ÷ 2 = 14. This means that the 14th number and 15th number are the two middle numbers (middle from the beginning and end). We start with our smallest number and count inward. The two scores in the middle are 75 & 75. 75 + 75 = 150, 150 ÷ 2 = 75, so the median is 75.

What is the mode? à To find the mode, you find the most common leaves. In the stem ‘7’, the leaf ‘5’ occurs 3 times and in the stem ‘8’, the leaf ‘1’ occurs 3 times. Therefore, the modes are 75 and 81.

After this, students worked on their own stem-and-leaf plots about the Toronto Raptors. Then, once checked by me, they moved onto their homework.

Homework:

We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.

As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
