I was able to hang up our Haida art today - take a look!

Inquiry into Language – We started the day by continuing our research for our speeches. Today was the last day that students had to complete their speech research. Students must ensure that they have research to support their points (i.e. saying ‘I just already knew this,’ cannot be used as evidence to support their points).

Music – Then, the students had music with Mr. Oliver, which you can read about on his blog (https://mrolivermusicclass.blogspot.com).

French – After this, the students had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Math – Students wrote their final unit test for our Data Management Unit today. Students will complete the Skills You’ll Need for the next unit over the weekend. This is a concept from out last unit on measurement (perimeter and area of squares and rectangles).

Inquiry into Explorers – Today, we began looking at different routes for trade used before the Age of Exploration. At this time, trade between Europe and Asia happened in Baghdad – this was the place that linked the two together. This land area over Asia was called the Silk Road.

From 1095 and 200 years after, European countries were involved in a set of Holy Wars called the Crusades. This war was to take the Holy Land. This is how many Europeans were brought into Asian ideas (silks, spices, etc.).

The Italian cities of Genoa and Venice became important trading centres during this time. In 1453, the Ottoman Empire captured the trading centre of Constantinople (later Istanbul) and start raising prices of items. This encouraged explorers to look for new ways to trade with Asia. They began exploring the waters west of them instead of East leading to new ways to Asia and the Americas.

Homework:

We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.

As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
