Monday, January 13th

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend despite this weather not wanting to make relaxing easy.

A reminder regarding the information night for the MYP and DP programs…

Another quick note:

Mr. Foster’s Farmers Market and Ms. Gandy’s Groceries

As part of their summative assessment the grade one classes have decided to open a market to complement their organization unit. The market will include fruits, vegetables, drinks and other healthy snacks. It will be held in rooms 12 and 18. The market will take place all day Thursday, January 23rd and Friday, January 24th. All profits made will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House.

And one last message regarding our upcoming Town Hall on January 24th.

Inquiry into Language – Today, we started working on our research. By today, students will have chosen their three strongest arguments for their speech to support their opinion. For the next three days, we will be working on researching and finding data to support our points so we can effectively write our speeches. Research can be completed at home as well as in school. All student work needs to be written (not typed as this causes copy and paste errors) and any edits should be in another colour in pen. Students are recommended to keep a working google doc or list of sources they are using to make their citations in the end easier.

I have sent an email regarding speeches and the overall work and expectations. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Music – Then, the students had music with Mr. Oliver, which you can read about on his blog (https://mrolivermusicclass.blogspot.com).

French – After this, the students had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Explorers – Today, we started by reviewing our information on Irish explorers.

After this, we started looking at Vikings! We worked through watching a video on the Vikings (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DalQsFVK-fk&t=134s) and completed our ‘Discovering America’ chart.

We did a few readings to help us learn about Vikings. Tonight, students will add to their timelines the Irish and Viking explorers.

Inquiry into Math – We started today by taking up the work from the weekend.

We started at looking at reasons why someone may choose to misrepresent data.

After this, we looked at 3 graphs:
·      The first graph contains no labels and is extremely misleading because it suggests that Quebec City has ten times as much snow as Toronto.
·      The second graph looks similar to the first but has a scale to show the differences. However, the scale does not start at 0.
·      The last graph is the best representation because the scale starts from 0 and does not suggest untrue information. The ratios are more correct.

After this, we looked at a line graph that misrepresents salary increases and redrew the graph so it is more accurate. By doing this, we show the there was not much of an increase. We looked at reasons why the information might be misrepresented. A company may choose to use the misrepresented version of the graph to make themselves look better, but a rival company may choose to use the true graph to make the company look bad.

Tomorrow, we are starting the final review for this unit in preparation for our test on Friday.

Homework:

We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.

As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
