We started the day with a class discussion. Firstly, we reviewed how to correctly wash our hands and the importance of doing so after using the washroom, before eating, and any other time they may be dirty (can’t be too careful). We reviewed how our classroom tables will be cleaned daily and there is hand sanitizer available in the class and that students should be ensuring to sanitize their hands.
Inquiry into Language – Yesterday and today, students were working on their introduction and conclusion for their speeches. The guidelines and expectations can be found in their speech duotangs. I will have counterarguments back for tomorrow as well as introductions and conclusions for anyone who gave them in. Some students decided they would like another night to work on this.
The introduction must start by stating the issue and addressing that it is a problem. Later in the introduction, the writer states their opinion on the topic and gives the reasons that support their point of view. This sets up everything the writer will say throughout the speech. In an introduction, the writer has an opportunity to captivate the audience and make them interested in the topic at hand.
The conclusion is very similar to the introduction. You restate the issue, why it is an issue, and the reasons that support what is being said. This is the last thing the audience hears, so it needs to be exciting and persuasive. Your conclusion is basically your introduction re-worded.
We will be working on this tomorrow.
Gym - Mr. Orr was absent today, so the students had gym with Mr. Beresford.
Inquiry into Explorers – Students worked on their RSA animate summative task. Today, the goal was to have our 10 steps decided on as well as the doodles decided for each step. With this done, that only leaves the recording of the videos tomorrow. We will be dedicating a lot of time tomorrow to recording.
Inquiry into Math – For math, the past two days we have been focussing on calculating the area of trapezoids and irregular figures.
First of all, we need to remember our formulas:
· Area of a square = s x s
· Area of a rectangle = bh
· Area of a parallelogram = bh
· Area of a triangle = bh/2
To calculate the area of a trapezoid, there are 3 ways to do this:
1. Divide it into a rectangle and one or two triangles. After you find the area of each of these shapes, add them together to find the total area.
2. Divide it into a parallelogram and one triangle. After you find the area of each of these shapes, add them together to find the total area.
3. Divide it into two triangles. After you find the area of each of these shapes, add them together to find the total area.
The same strategy works for irregular shapes – we did an example together.
Tomorrow, we will take up today’s homework and do a cumulative review of this unit in preparation for our test on Friday.
Homework:
We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
Mr. Conte
