I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week.
We have our annual book fair next week!
A few quick reminders:
· Monday is a Day 1.
· Aftercare invoices for the month of October have come out and were due Friday, November 15th, 2019. Any questions can be directed to Ms. Chiappetta at echiappetta@stjudesacademy.com
Inquiry into Flight – Today, we started our summative task. Students will be building different flying devices and testing to see which one can fly the furthest. We are going to be having our Air Show next week (most likely Thursday).
Students will have to prepare a report on which plane was able to fly the furthest based on the variable they decided to change.
French – After this, we had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).
Gym – After recess and lunch, the students had gym with Mr. Orr, which you can read about on his blog (http://tysonorr.blogspot.com).
Inquiry into Math – Today, we learned about adding and subtracting fractions with a common denominator.
First, we learned about common denominators, which is a number that is a multiple of each of the given denominators.
Let’s take 4/5 & 5/6.
List the multiples:
5 à 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30
6 à 6, 12, 18, 24, 30
30 is the LCM of 5 & 6.
For 4/5, 30 is the 6th multiple, so we multiply the numerator and denominator by 6 to write an equivalent fraction (remind students that if they do not multiply both numerator and denominator, they are not writing an equivalent fraction, they are changing the fraction entirely).
4 x 6 = 24, 5 x 6 = 30, so 4/5 becomes 24/30
We do the same thing for 5/6. 30 is the 5th multiple, so we multiply the numerator and denominator by 5 to write an equivalent fraction.
5 x 5 = 25, 6 x 5 = 30, so 5/6 becomes 25/30
You cannot add, subtract, or compare fractions that do not have a common denominator (students should recall that when comparing ratios, one of the numbers must be in common).
To add fractions…
1. Find a common denominator. à 30
2. Write equivalent fractions. à 24/30, 25/30
3. Add/subtract the numerators in order. à 24 + 25 = 49
4. Keep the denominator the same. à 49/30
5. Simplify, if possible.
Now an example of subtraction…
A fraction is in simplified form when the numerator and denominator have no common factors.
We had a quick rehearsal to practice the finale for the Christmas Concert! Here are the links for the song for our Christmas Concert song:

Art – We did not get to art today, but we will be painting on Monday. Students may come dressed in casual clothes, so they do not get paint on their uniforms. They are to choose a hot air balloon design that they would like to design and paint. They can watch the following video to practice basket weaving: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Atikz2Y4si0&t=25s
Homework:
We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
Mr. Conte
