A few quick reminders:
· Tomorrow is a Day 2 (students should bring their gym clothes).
· Aftercare invoices for the month of November have come out and are due Sunday, December 15th, 2019. Any questions can be directed to Ms. Chiappetta at echiappetta@stjudesacademy.com
· Pick-a-Time forms have been sent home with instructions on how to sign up for a time to meet during student-led conferences taking place this Thursday, December 5th. The site went live last Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
We started the day by having our own rehearsal for Christmas Concert in the classroom. It’s coming together so well – we’re very excited to share with you. The details of the concert should be coming soon.
Inquiry into Language – Today, we took up the answers for chapters 1 & 2 for Tuck Everlasting. Students were reminded that all of the questions that are asked occur throughout the chapter, so no one should have blank answers. We discussed what makes a good answer for our questions.
An answer that is an ‘R’ means that the work is incomplete, or the answer shows no understanding. A level one answer has the correct answer but has no detail and does not use the question to provide the answer. A level two is correct and uses part of the question to answer the question (saying ‘They’ instead of ‘Mae Tuck, her husband, Miles, and Jesse’), but has no detail. A level three is correct and uses the question in the answer but does not provide detail. A level four has the correct answer, uses the question in the answer, and provides additional detail.
We will continue to review this on a daily basis.
French – After this, we had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).
Inquiry into Explorers – We started the class today by discussing “Canadian Identity”. Students shared what their families had to see about what having a Canadian identity means. This is a question we will be revisiting throughout the unit. Students need to watch the video called What it Means to be Canadian. The link is below.
After this, we began to look at Aboriginal creation stories. First, I read The Earth on Turtle’s Back to the class. We reflected on how this relates to Canadian identity. We are going to be creating our own Turtle’s back mosaic to represent our class “Canadian Identity”.
After this, students read two Aboriginal creation stories. They filled out their own personal examinations of these stories looking at symbols, explanation of the world, moral, and items from nature. We looked at these as a class.
Tonight, students will come home and share what they’ve learned. Then, they will discuss with you, their family, about the origin of people. If they are comfortable, they can share with the class tomorrow.
We talked about student-led conferences for Thursday.
After this, we re-explored a question from yesterday – “Who were the first peoples to reach the American continent?” Students will be filling out these answers and changing them based on their viewpoints as the unit goes on.
Inquiry into Math – We started the day by taking up homework from yesterday.
After this, we began division of decimals. First, we reviewed basic long division. Ã 2668 ÷ 29
92
29 | 2668
-261 Ã 29 x 9 = 261
58 Ã Carry down the 8
-58 Ã 29 x 2 = 58
0 R
After this, we did a question with decimals. Teacher will show students that division of decimals is just like division of whole numbers, only with a decimal.
Let’s take 26.68 ÷ 2.9. First, we need to round and estimate.
26.68 Ã 27 & 2.9 Ã 3
27 ÷ 3 = 9, so we know the answer will be around 9.
We do long/short division to find the answer, but first remove the decimals.
92
29 | 2668
-261 Ã 29 x 9 = 261
58 Ã Carry down the 8
-58 Ã 29 x 2 = 58
0 R
Now we need to add the decimal back. There are a couple of possible answers: 0.92, 9.2, or 92. Since 9.2 is closest to 9, we can assume (based on our estimate) that 9.2 is the correct answer. We multiplied to check our answer.
After this, we looked at a question with a repeating decimal.
Students should be listening to our songs and rehearsing for Christmas Concert nightly. Here are the links for the song for our Christmas Concert song:

Homework:
We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework. For math, students are given math homework, extra practice (optional), and a challenge question (optional).
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
