Today, we had a video presentation to learn about why we run for Terry Fox in preparation for our Terry Fox run tomorrow.
Inquiry into Math – We started with our multiplication drills this morning.
After this, we took up our homework on divisibility rules.
Music – Then, we had music with Mr. Oliver, which you can read about on his blog (https://mrolivermusicclass.blogspot.com).
French – Right after music, we had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).
Inquiry into Energy – Today, we started by talking about Thomas Edison. Students were asked to add Edison to their timelines yesterday. Many came in today and told the class how “Edison invented the lightbulb!” However, Edison is credited as the inventor of the lightbulb, but it was that he was able to create a working model. Edison had a rivalry with Nikola Tesla who many believe to be the original inventor. Edison went on to start a power company that would later become General Electric.
After we talked about Edison, students were split into groups and visited various ‘energy centres’ where they observed and examined the various transformations of energy (i.e. a hair straightener converting electrical energy to heat energy).
We discussed the law of conservation of energy:
Once we finished this, we watched a fantastic Ted Talk on mind mapping.
Students will be using this technique to create a mind map about energy in preparation for their test on October 2nd.
Inquiry into Math – Today, we started our unit on Patterns in Whole Numbers. We started off by talking about the numbers that are all around us. We looked at when we might use exact numbers and when we might use estimations. For example, if we are surveying all of Canada, it is impractical to ask every single person, so we estimate. If we are surveying our class, we only have 17 of us, so it’s very practical to use exact numbers!
Overall, here is what we learned today:
And that’s it! Tomorrow is Friday, and that’s the first full week of school done!
Homework:
We do our best to complete UOI and Language work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
