Good afternoon everyone!
I hope everyone is enjoying this lovely weather.
Just a reminder that this week is our fall fundraiser. Students will be fundraising for St. Jude’s, which in turn helps us purchase things like math manipulatives and other resources for our school. Students who bring in a minimum of $40 will be able to attend a trip to Glow Zone. Tomorrow is Ice Cream Sandwich Day, so any students who paid their $2 for tomorrow will receive an ice cream sandwich!
In advance, I’d like to apologize for the lack of pictures today. My phone camera was intermittently working.
A few quick reminders:
· Tomorrow is a Day 4 (we do not have gym so students don’t need their gym uniforms).
· For anyone who ordered Hot Lunch, payments were due on the 13th of September.
o If September balances are unpaid, October lunches will not be able to be ordered.
· The hot lunch site is open for the month of October and will close on Wednesday, September 25th at 3:00 p.m. The special for October will be pancakes with vanilla cream and syrup (optional).
· Letters were sent home last week for the Caribou math contest. Any students looking to participate must bring the letter back signed. The month of October is a free test for all grade levels as a trial – this is an optional commitment.
· Fall Fundraiser trip permission forms and pledge forms were sent home yesterday.
Inquiry into Energy – We started our day with an inquiry into energy. Today, we began looking at magnets and examining electricity in magnetism (electromagnetism). We discussed how the magnetic field of the earth works, and then conducted a small experiment to look at electromagnetism. We wrapped an iron nail in a copper coil and attached the end of the copper coil to a battery. By doing this, the flow of electricity creates a magnetic field. We were able to pick up paper clips. Students will need to watch these videos tonight:
Students were reminded about their UOI test next Wednesday, October 2nd.
French – Right after this, we had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).
Inquiry into Language – Today, students worked to catch up on any work unfinished from chapters 3 and 4. We will resume our discussions for literature circles tomorrow.
After this, we had an assembly for the Fall Fundraiser which is taking place this week! Each day has a different activity which students would have brought in money for. The events are: Ice Cream Sandwich Day on Wednesday, Wacky Thursday, and a 1-hour electronics party on Friday. We will also have daily prizes for the top fundraisers. They are:
· Wednesday – Student will apply make-up on Mr. Oliver
· Thursday – Student will style a teacher’s hair
· Friday – Student will choose a teacher to pie in the face
Today, one of our Grade Three students brought in $305 and got to silly string Mrs. Hocevar!
Inquiry into Energy – In the afternoon, students began to independently read the OPG (Ontario Power Generation) guide and learn about how we generate energy in Ontario. We will be continuing this learning tomorrow.
Inquiry into Math – Today, we started looking at number patterns. We discussed how just recognizing a pattern isn’t enough. You must be able to apply the pattern and communicate it as well.
Let’s look at the pattern: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25,
We can look at this pattern and say that each term is equal to the term number squared. We can also say: “Start at 1. Add 3 each time. Increase the number you are adding each time by 2.”
Then the next 3 terms would be: 36, 49, 64.
We will be starting the review tomorrow for the unit test on Monday.
Homework:
We do our best to complete UOI and Language work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
Mr. Conte
