Friday, September 6th

Good afternoon everyone!

Just like that, our first week of school is done – just 36 left (not that anyone is counting)! We have had a very busy week in Grade 6, and today was no exception.

A few quick reminders:
·     Monday is a Day 4 (students will need to bring their gym uniforms).
o  Students will also need devices on Monday for UOI.
·     For anyone who ordered Hot Lunch, payments are due on the 13thof September (next Friday).
·     BBQ forms and payments should be returned by next Friday, September 13th.
·     Terry Fox letters and pledge forms were sent home today. We are hoping to raise $5000 as a school by next Friday, September 13th, which is the day of our Terry Fox run!

We actually started our day with a few House Games to end Neophyte week. It was also a Spirit Day – we all wore house colours. I was so happy to see the halls flooded with green, blue, and orange.

After the games in the morning, we wrote our OWA (Ontario Writing Assessment) pre-assessment for term one. As we continue through the term, we will be learning the necessary skills needed to write and will rewrite the assessment after our learning to see how much we have grown.

French – Right after music, we had French with Mme. Stella, which you can read about on her blog (https://stjudesfrench-stella.blogspot.com).

Inquiry into Language – Today, we continued learning about action word poems, and even wrote one of our own! To refresh, an action word poem is built by using a topic sentence (noun), verbs (describing the noun), and a closing statement (finish the sentence). It is formed like this:

Line 1: Opening sentence
Line 2 – n: verbs (we write ‘n’ because it can have as many verbs as we like).
Last line: Closing statement

After this, we completed our DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment). We will write two more throughout the year, and I will be conferencing with students over the next few weeks on ways they can improve on their DRA.

At the end of the day, we wrote our pre-assessment for our first math unit – Patterns in Whole Numbers – that we will be starting on Monday.

And just like that – the first week is already over. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Homework:
·     French: C’est Moi! (due Monday)
·     Language: Action word poem about myself (due Monday)
·     All About Me! (due Monday)
·     BBQ forms due next Friday
·     Devices needed on Monday
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
