Good afternoon everyone!
I hope everyone is having a fantastic week so far.
A few quick reminders:
· Tomorrow is a Day 4 (we have gym so students will need their gym uniforms).
· For anyone who ordered Hot Lunch, payments are due Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019.
· Aftercare invoices for the month of September have come out and are due on the Tuesday, October 15th, 2019. Any questions can be directed to Ms. Chiappetta at echiappetta@stjudesacademy.com
· Letters were sent home last week for the Caribou math contest. Any students looking to participate must bring the letter back signed. The month of October is a free test for all grade levels as a trial – this is an optional commitment.
· Fall Fundraiser trip permission forms and pledge forms were sent home last week.
We started the day by presenting our inquirer awards for September. Congratulations to all the winners. For our class, our winner was Joshua!
We went to Old Pro Driving Range today for our golf trip!
Inquiry into Energy – After lunch, we wrote our Energy test.
Inquiry into Math – Today, we started our new unit on ratios and rates. We started off by practicing the skills we need to be successful in this unit.
The first thing we need is factor trees. A factor tree is similar to finding LCM and GCF like we did in the previous math unit. You start with a number. You draw two lines extending from this number that multiply to give you that number. You continue to do this until you are left with all prime numbers. If you have a prime number early on, you draw just a single line and carry it down.
To find the GCF, you find the numbers in common in the bottom line and multiply them together.
For LCM, you multiply all the numbers in the bottom line together. If there are any numbers in common, you count them only one time per pair in your multiplication.
After this, we went over converting units of measurement. When converting a smaller unit to a larger unit, you divide. When converting a larger unit to a smaller unit, you multiply. Here are our conversions:
· mm à cm – move one decimal place left (divide by 10)
· cm à m – move two decimal places left (divide by 100)
· m à km – move three decimal places left (divide by 1000)
· km à m – move three decimal places right (multiply by 1000)
· m à cm – move two decimal places right (multiply by 100)
· cm à mm – move one decimal place right (multiply by 10)
Homework:
- Math: Pg. 42-44 # 1-5
- Read COE ch. 8 and complete literature circle role
We do our best to complete work in class. In the event this is not possible, it will go home for homework.
As always, please feel free to email me with any questions.
Mr. Conte
